Commercial Heating - Alternatives to Fossil Fuel Boilers

Published March 19, 2012 by Stuart Boardman

How heat is provided to commercial buildings has to change dramatically. Fuel security, fossil fuel prices, increasingly tough legislation and the need to combat climate change are all driving the demand for greater efficiency and the inclusion of renewable energy.

The Key Drivers encouraging the use of renewable heating are:

  • The need to reduce CO2 emmissions by 80% by 2050
  • Reducing the UK's reliance on fossil fuels
  • Meeting increasingly tough legislation
  • Incorporating renewable energy

Commercial buildings are responsible for 18% of total UK emmissions and typically 51% of the emmissions generated by each building are due to the need for space and water heating.

It is clear that if the UK is to achieve the goals that have been set then these areas need urgent attention. This is why many new build and major refurbishment projects throughout the UK must now demonstate significant use of renewable energy or simply face planning refusal.
